Who is Adams 12 KID?
Adams 12 KID is a group of parents and advocates. We are working to promote awareness of dyslexia and related learning differences and enable students to meet their maximum potential. Adams 12 KID partners with Adams 12 Five Star School which serves schools in Broomfield, Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, and Federal Heights in Colorado.
Adams 12 KID primarily focuses our work on dyslexia and dysgraphia. Dyslexia is a learning disability that impairs reading ability. Dysgraphia impacts handwriting and fine motor skills. However we believe serving kids with dyslexia and dysgraphia serves all kids.
Vision
Adams 12 Five Star Schools uses evidence-based methods of teaching literacy to all students in a supportive and encouraging environment.
Mission
Adams 12 KID works to promote awareness of dyslexia and related learning differences in the Adams 12 Five Star Schools and enable students to meet their maximum potential.
Goals
Collaborate with Adams 12 Five Star Schools to ensure district-wide literacy curriculums, assessments, interventions, and monitoring are evidenced-based and universally applied with frequency, intensity, duration, and fidelity.
Implement an evidence-based core literacy program in grades K-3 that includes the components research has identified essential to success for students learning to read - comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonemic awareness, phonics, and decoding.
Administer a universal, evidence-based screening assessment to determine a student’s risk for reading difficulty and the need for intervention. All current K-3 students to be screened and any new students entering the district.
Employ data from universal screenings to make informed decisions and apply evidence-based interventions and progress monitoring. Interventions should address the student's needs, as identified by the screening process. Progress is to be assessed frequently to determine the student’s response to the chosen intervention and rate of improvement.
Provide accommodations suitable at all grade levels universally and equitably to make it possible for students to learn and demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities through full participation in classroom instruction and assessments.
Require academic staff at all grade levels and district administrators to receive the most current professional training and development based on the science of reading to empower them to feel confident in their ability to teach any child to succeed in literacy and core curriculum.
Create a universal and equitable pathway from kindergarten through high school, providing access to all curricula with peers of similar intellectual capacity and achieving similar graduation rates to the overall student population.
