The Task Force recommends that the State, school districts, and teachers:
Provide students with evidence-based reading instruction based on the science of reading.
Catch at risk students early, and provide rapid intervention.
Ensure all students enter school ready to learn through early intervention, including voluntary universal Pre-K.
Provide appropriate instruction for a range in student aptitudes by implementing a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) structure.
Ensure that teachers have the tools they need, through science-based teacher training at the University’s School of Education and ongoing training for teachers in the workorce.
Recognize Dyslexia early and respond with proven interventions.
Ensure equitable access for districts in rural Alaska, especially by ensuring rural schools have the broadband capabilities to access high-quality online reading instructional tools.
Ensure districts and schools implement new reading practices with fidelity

RHODE ISLAND– – H5887 passed 7/8/19: Among other things, requires Dept of Ed shall develop a collaborative learning laboratory, no later than January 2020, the general assembly shall form a joint study research commission to study the possibility and feasibility of establishing two schools on college campuses which would be dedicated to the instruction of dyslexic children and the development of instructional techniques and professional development programs used to improve the instruction and identification of dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

WASHINGTON – Task Force ongoing.
By June 1, 2019, identify tools and resources that will help screen for dyslexia or indicators of dyslexia; and
By June 1, 2020, develop recommendations on best practices for implementing the screenings in school districts, staff training to target the areas of need for those experiencing dyslexia or indicators of dyslexia, information for parents and families that includes a list of resources, and best practices to help students in grades three and above who might be experiencing dyslexia.
